Although China objects, the world has worked through an arduous, 10-year process to prepare for the first manned mission to Mars including developing a timetable for the distribution of Martian resources. Eight days before the launch, the Spaceship Unity explodes on the launch pad and the internationally-selected, spacenauts are missing. The world is on the verge of war. The question is who has the wherewithal to circumvent the United States’ high-tech security shrouding the mission and why. The following are China and her allies, including black Africa, have protested virulently against the mission from the beginning insisting that the current mission status cedes the New Worlds, its resources and emergent technologies disproportionately to the United States and countries espousing Western ideologies. Popular newscaster Pham, a Chinese American born in the United States, becomes a key character. A consortium of scientists claims that the technology has not advanced to the degree to safely use the nuclear energy powering the spaceship. Some of these scientists live in the Timber Science Like Community, home to some of the brightest people in the world. The goals of the WikiLeakers, an elite group of world hackers, are to assure at any cost that every aspect of the mission is transparent so that the world citizens can make the best decisions about the future. WikiLeakers claim neutrality. The Association of Modern Women, a radical women’s group, demands a matriarchal Mars so that women can develop to their full potential. The women provide a wealth of research to support their position. Poor people around the world campaign for relief. A leader arises who insists that the Martian wealth cannot be inequitably distributed. There are other groups. In the process of determining who sabotaged the Manned Mars Mission Unity, follow the path of everyday citizens as they weigh in on how to colonize Mars in a manner that redresses societal ills, the same exercise that we citizens will ultimately participate in.
