When Rebecca Barnett and her friends decided to leave their office jobs on Tyneside in 1941 and join the armed forces, they had no idea what they were letting themselves in for. They volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and would soon be embarking on an overseas adventure that would take the innocent teenagers on a voyage of discovery far from their home in wartime Northeast England to in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the island of Ceylon, where they would spend the remaining wartime years working as teleprinter operators.

On their travels they would encounter danger, romance, friendship, heartbreak and hilarity, all of which are described with quiet good humour in this enjoyable account of their remarkable wartime experiences.
